40G QSFP BiDi Module Overview
Optical transceiver modules are used to update the communication networks as well as data center networks with high speeds. With growing demand of reliable and high speed communication, Optical networks would be the backbone for communication network. Therefore ,optical transceivers tend to be used for the communication network infrastructure ,migration from 10G to higher speed 40G or 100G becomes an inevitable trend on the market, this article will focus on 40G QSFP BiDi module.
40G QSFP BiDi module turns four channels each of 10Gbps transmit signals and receive signals into two bidirectional channels of 20Gbps signals. The connection can support link length up to 100m on OM3 MMF or 150m on OM4 MMF.
What is the Difference between 40G QSFP BiDi and 40GBASE SR4 QSFP+?
40G QSFP BiDi and 40GBASE SR4 QSFP+ both use to support short-range 40G connectivity, 40GBASE SR4 QSFP+ use independent transmitter and receiver sections with each 4 parallel fiber strands. 40GBASE SR4 QSFP+ can support link lengths up to 100 meters and 150 meters over 8-fiber or 12-fiber MPO/MTP OM3 and OM4 multimode fibers for a 40Gbps connection.
40G QSFP BiDi has two 20Gbps channels, each transmitted and received simultaneously over two wavelengths on a single MMF strand. It can support link lengths up to 100 meters and 150 meters on duplex LC OM3 and OM4 multimode fibers, which can be used to the existing 10G duplex MMF infrastructure for migration to 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
Cabling Solutions of 40G QSFP BiDi
In an unstructured cabling system, devices are connected directly with fiber cables. This direct-attachment design can be used to connect devices within short distances in a data center network. Direct connection between two 40-Gbps devices can be provided by MMF cables with QSFP BiDi transceivers at two ends.
In a structured cabling system, it is commonly deployed in data center networks to provide more flexible and scalable cabling infrastructure. Structured cabling uses short patch cords to attach devices to a patch panel and then uses fiber trunk cables either to consolidate the cables in a central location for additional connectivity or to direct the cables to another patch panel.
Advantage of QSFP BIDI transceiver
1: QSFP BiDi transceivers can reuse existing 10G fiber infrastructure for 40G cable connections
2: QSFP BiDi transceivers can decrease the cost of fiber cabling connections since it requires less fiber cable as well as less fiber patch panels.
3: QSFP BiDi transceivers can save much more available space in data centers.
The data center networks are shifting from 10 Gbps to 40Gbps at the aggregation layer. In order to support 40Gbps connectivity, data center need to upgrade the cabling infrastructure, 40G QSFP BiDi transceiver modules can reuse the existing 10Gbps cabling for 40Gbps device connectivity. 40Gbps structured cabling solution is cost-effective solution for 10G to 40G migration, users can update their network from 10G Ethernet to 40G Ethernet without any fiber infrastructure upgrade cost. Utoptical QSFP BiDi transceivers provide 40Gbps connectivity with immense savings and simplicity compared to other 40-Gbps QSFP transceivers.
